Proofreading School
FAQs
-
What if proofreading is not for me? Any other classes?Yes! We offer a variety of online grammar, writing, self-publishing, and digital media classes to suit your interests and budget. Visit Onyx Online Education & Training for a full listing of all classes:
-
I'm already a writer/editor/teacher. Is this a good fit?Well, that decision is completely up to you. However, proofreading is a skill that is different from writing, teaching, or editing. Your education background will certainly serve you well in establishing yourself as a paid proofreader. But perhaps our classes can offer you new information or provide a refresher to boost the skills you already possess that can be transferred to proofreading. Be sure to check the course curriculum for each class to help with your decision: https://www.onyxedonline.com
-
What does self-paced learning mean?Self-paced means that you are not hands-on with an instructor, but that you are an independent learner. You read and work through the class materials at any time of day for however many hours or minutes you want to spend on each class. Although there are no live class sessions, you can email the instructor directly or post questions to the discussion board at any time for assistance.
-
Will I become a certified proofreader? You will receive a certificate of completion, which is not the same as being certified. There is no proofreading college degree or certification program, to speak of, in the United States. However, our proofreading courses and certificates are similar to college extension courses for adult learners. Remember, our classes are non-credit bearing, meaning no college credit is given. But, our certificates establish your credibility and dedication to professional development training.
-
Do I need a college degree? Not necessarily, but you need decent writing skills. Why should someone trust you to correct their very important documents? What experience do you have? So, you must be a good writer and reader with some experience in your background that will convince people to pay for your services or hire you in their company as a proofreader.
-
Will you help me find proofreading clients? No, but we do offer products to support your marketing efforts. We focus on providing the skills you need to establish yourself as a paid proofreader. However, we have published a low-cost book that gives step-by-step guidance on starting a freelance proofreading business--Start Your Proofreading Side-Hustle: Maximize Your Writing Skills. We also offer a freelance proofreading accelerator course that focuses on marketing your skills and starting a business--Freelance Proofreading Express. As of September 2023, we now offer a group coaching community called Proofreading School. You can receive guidance on how to find and handle your first proofreading client, as well as resources to sharpen and improve your editing skills.
-
Is there a time limit on enrollment? Our self-paced online classes are built to deliver high quality training in a short amount of time for busy professionals. However, most classes offer lifetime enrollment, but always check to make sure.
-
How long is each online class session? Most classes for individual users offer lifetime access, but check the course description to make sure. Express, Intro, Entrepreneur, and Teacher PD classes are usually available for 90 days. (The timeframe might differ per class.) Please make sure to complete the entire class before your time expires.
-
Why are there no refunds? Our courses have taken copious amounts of time, energy, perseverance, and personal finances to build. We are confident that all of our courses deliver the exact instruction you need to improve your writing skills. Plus, you get to enter most classes for a free preview before you spend any money.
-
When will I receive my certificate?Certificates are immediately auto-generated when you complete 100% of the course, and can be downloaded from your student dashboard in PDF format. If you cannot retrieve your certificate, contact the Director.

Are these classes on Udemy? No. Ashan's classes on Udemy are not as in-depth as those listed on her own educational platform, Onyx Online Education, LLC where you can find affordable online writing classes at a variety of price points.
